The Battle Of Wittstock October 4, 1636 After a long siege in summer 1636 the united imperial and Saxonian troops managed to take Magdeburg. North from the city, near Werben the Swedish army was encamped with Banner in command. The army didn't feel fit enough to come for rescue. Soon both armies began approaching one another. Banner schemed his invasion into Saxonia while the allies strived to force him back. Finally the battle broke out near Wittstock, Prignitz county. It was one of the most striking battles in the world history. Banner, possessing an army of 16000 soldiers was outnumbered by 22000 his opponent soldiers. Assured, that the enemy is indestructible from the front, Banner outflanked it from both sides. The battle raged until dusk. Banner won a brilliant victory over numerically superior opponent. |
